We are offering an opportunity to experience the magic of the Blue Ghost Fireflies! We have discovered a colony of these wonderful flickering critters deep in a private forest, near Asheville but far from other people. These are not the same fireflies that you see flying above your lawn in the summer. These are dim, mysterious creatures that move slowly just above the forest floor. They are only found in certain parts of remote forests in North Carolina.
Their mating season is short and their ecosystem is fragile so we are only offering a handful of tours to a few lucky people this May.
To experience this phenomenon, you must be brave and curiously minded, willing to sit in total darkness while deep in the woods at night. The reward for your bravery is an experience you’ll never forget!
We will meet in Asheville and carpool to the location. The trip involves approximately a half mile of hiking in the dark over uneven terrain. You should be in good physical shape with some hiking experience.
The tour is not photography-centric but you are welcome to bring your camera. We will gladly help you with your settings, etc. Only those who have high-quality gear will be able to capture a decent image. You’ll want a wide-angle lens with an aperture of f2.8 or wider. You MUST cover all sources of light that your camera emits, including the rear LCD screen. You can use a black cloth to drape over the rear of your camera. Use black tape to cover any blinking lights. This is for the protection of the fireflies and for the sake of the other participants enjoying the fireflies. We will discuss this process further prior to setting out for the hike.
